As a personal blogger before this assignment, I thought that I knew everything about blogging. However after the assignment, it somehow helps me to understand the skills as a blogger needed. Like for example insert the theory of Reep (2006) whereby salience, framing and layout will provide readability and easy navigation to the readers. I have layout all the pictures at the center and as well there is framing between each posting.
On top of that Multimodality by Walsh (2006) encourages interactivity while engaging readers. This will somehow create a community in my blog for discussion whether is a chat box on the right or the comments. In addition adding and giving hyperlinks to other sites will eventually create a ‘joy ride’ whereby readers can jump from one page to another.
Well learning from this, I will definitely design well for my future blog so that is readable. Must and always be ethical at all times, avoiding any infringement copyright by acknowledging them and reference the author. Last but not least, I will avoid any negative and sensitive topic to the culture such as nudity and religions.

Face-to-face in textual world
In the article, email with words may seem boring and sometimes receiver may not understand what the senders sent. Therefore the use of emoticons appears to make the sentence seemingly more meaningful. Emoticons or today is called as smiley is nothing but the combination of colon, hyphen and parenthesis. It was set that some sentences send via e-mail may be sensitive and might hurt the receiver’s feeling, for example:

Adding emoticon like shown above is a form of pleasure, or a joke that one wants to make. Multimodality is a need for design and development of multimedia-based to stimulate the readers (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2001). Emoticons are added in today’s society technology to have a face-to-face communication.
According to Lowe, (n.d) stated that emoticon are a form expression that goes along with the text. This is because face-to-face communication is essential and therefore the emoticons are used to representative of our expression through text (Microsoft, 2009). Technology today allows people to send instant message or e-mail with emoticons may bond one and another and avoid any miscommunication.

Whether is in virtual online or instant messenger, the emoticon is a trend that is famously used by all aged people. However it depends on the person who whether want to use it appropriately or as an insult to the others.

Copy and paste, Rip and share
In the article, J.K Rowling wins the court against a fan that violated her copyright with his plan to publish ‘Potter encyclopaedia’. J.K Rowling argued that her 17 years of hard work writing the story was literally robbed by a person. The people who infringement copyright argues that he just expand the term used in the books. That person’s particular ‘Potter encyclopaedia’ was also known as ‘Harry Potter Lexicon’.
According to Reep (2006, pp.41) defines copyright as "the legal protection for the creators of original works". Infringement is a serious crime in today’s society because refers to the violation of a law or intellectual property right of an individual or entity company (Mirandah, 2009). One’s hard work stolen from other people are inconsiderate hence due to the emergence of technology, anybody at anywhere and anytime can easily ‘helped’ mankind to ‘copy and paste’ to another place.
On top of that, every lecturer stress out saying that plagiarism can be ugly, plagiarism can make someone expelled from school because such act is disrespectful to the original author. Therefore as a student, every work academic work that we write must always remember to insert references as an acknowledgement.
Let’s move to the music industries. The emergence of technology once again ‘did its magic’. In Jone’s article stated that RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) requests for a summary judgement against a couple who burn songs from CDs and downloaded file-sharing programs. It is true that music copyright infringement could be illegal however the judge for this case argued that the defendant only contribute to copyright infringement, the couple did not put files into shared folder and someone copied from them.
According to Hom (2006) copyright infringement could mean as using someone else’s work without that person’s consent in a tangible form such as songs, web page, pictures and videos are illegal. Not just in print, but as well as other things can be legally sued if one did not take notice.
To me, first of all serve the person who infringe J.K Rowling’s work, it’s bad and disrespectful. However for the music copyright, I am on the fence right now because 1) writers lose a lot which is bad and 2) many communities don’t have to waste money buying songs.

Obama and iPhone is a WIN!
Surprisingly nowadays politicians use alternative media to try to win the votes. The latest and most talk about in the election is the President of The United States Barack Obama. Not just because he stood center stage and made a passionate speech in hopes of delivering equality between race and political lines, he is the first African-American to win the presidential vote (Louie, 2007).
In the article, stated that Obama campaign uses mobile phone to connect direct to the audience or nation and for that creates potential in helping the vote cast. The mobile for this campaign function as ‘’Call Friends’’ to make sure nation’s family and friends cast their votes to Obama.
According to Schirato and Yell (1996) stated that genre is a form of senses of types expected from different field, tenor and mode. This means that the campaign uses mobile (iphone) as a new genre to easily have a ‘face-to-face’ communication with the nation through mobile.
According to Shankland (2008) stated that Senator Barack Obama launched an iPhone application for the presidential campaign as a political recruiting tool. The key of iPhone is making it easy to reach out and make a quick impact to the audience.
However didn’t they realize the consequences of using mobile phone too much? Why are they still insisting nations to vote for him through mobiles?
Mobile phone has loads of complication and it endangers the health issue in today’s society. Consider that mobile phone these days may cause all kinds of health implication, for instant brain tumor and brain disturbance (PSRAST, 2009).
Besides, base on my experience, watching football from mobile, a small screen will strain my eyes. Due to the size of the screen, I have to focus so much towards the screen causing nothing but misery and torture, maybe which is one of the reasons that my eye power increased!

Photographer's story and picture
Photojournalism in today’s society is a fun and interesting job however at one point it is a difficult and dangerous job that one can have. One may endanger his/her life especially those who were assign to the war country. This is because they constantly risk their lives bringing the latest news to the country.
However the pitfall of photojournalist is reported in the article. It is that some stories were modified by the editors. Not just story were edited even pictures were chosen by the editors, they are the ones who have the authority to show the readers what they want them to know and see. After all the hard work of photojournalist, their story may not turn out exactly the same in the newspaper.
‘’...It's him that I trust. Whereas in the media, we have editors, publishers, who are sitting at their desks with their own political or ideological views of telling the story’’ (Wade Goddard 2007).
In this case, Schirato and Yell (1996) stated that a narrative is a way of structuring meanings in the form of a story. Although news and/or story appear seemingly nice and understandable, but not all news has the narrative that was written by the journalist. The editors expectation were so high and wanting the story like how they ideologically expected but did not achieve, therefore changes the story bits by bits.
For now let’s talk about photography. Photojournalists are the people with creativity this is because their writing and photography skill were so great that many people respect, even I envy it. According to Reep (2006) stated that balance is a comparable visual ‘weight’ on both sides of a page or on opposing pages. This means that perfect picture has its own balance therefore as a photographer, setting up a position and composition to capture one perfect picture is not easy. In addition every picture taken has its own meaning behind.
Does everyone agree that pictures worth a thousand words? It depends; according to Walsh (2006) pictures have its own meaning, known as visual grammars. Visual grammars help audience to interpret the meaning behind the picture, making readers to understand what it means easily. Some people may interpret the meaning differently.

Picture is worth a thousand words, as far as sports concern is true. According to artsyTime (2009) there are many wonderful and unforgettable moments captured by photographers. Blog vs Facebook vs Twitter
According to Schriver (1997) stated that designed or publish must cater to the audiences' needs, wants and beliefs. Therefore all the social network communication such as Blog, Facebook and Twitter has accomplish the theory above to cater to many users online.
Firstly, the entire article was about the different communication style between the three social networks, each has different number of reader. For Blog is not intended to have one-to-many communication whereas is basically for public knowing. On the other hand, Facebook is more for private, one-to-not-many basis. These are the least that Scott Karp found the difference between those.
However each has its own pitfalls. For instant, blogs sometime maybe too controversial whereby all kinds of topic were talked about even from politicians to celebrity gossips. This is because many people’s perception of blogs is freedom of speech whereby they are allowed to post and voice their own opinion without being stopped (BBC, 2006). In addition blogs has the function of visual, imagery and sound visuals. According to Walsh (2006) stated that visual, imagery and sound visuals are keys to giving audiences opportunity to interact with others and as well as giving more choices.
On the other hand Facebook is much more private compared to Blog. This is because that Facebook are normally invited of friends and family, someone who one may know in order to view the profile. According to Zittrain (2009) Facebook may be dangerous to many ‘private users’ in Facebook. This is because that the world of internet may expose all sorts of personal details such as account number or home address. On top of that, Facebook allows anybody which the computer feels that the person is connected with others is related. For example A knows B, but might not know B’s friend C, and simply asked A to invite C as friend.
The latest issue about Twitter is it allows burglar to enter the user’s home. Base on the article Hedengren (2009) the Israel Hyman who twittered the vacation for about a week got his house burglarized. Without knowing some people might have intention in ‘’Following’’ you in order for them to know your latest activity, therefore gives the burglar time to prepare and work on their magic to rob the house when you are on vacation.

Photoblog might be real
Photolog originated from the word photo blog, and its function is to share photo like a photo journal with unlimited text description (KeepandShare, 2009). According to Shriver (1997) both word and text must collaborate in order to bring meaning from the picture to the audience. Therefore, photolog allows user not just upload pictures but as well able to type in the caption of the particular event.

Therefore, it is not entirely good about editing because as it might not please someone especially clients with the outcome of the pictures.
Another good example has posted in youtube.com by Dove showing that beauty in today’s society has been distorted, and photographers lose their originality. Whether the pictures in photo blog is real or another form of cheat.
It is up to you to judge whether editing pictures is a positive or negative manner.

Wow! many types of Blogs
Blogs are classified in different categories whether is about fashion, politics, religions, entertainment, lifestyle and sports, from there it is divided in another few more categories, for example, Sports category of blog has basketball, football, baseball and cycling (Technorati, 2009).
Today, many readers read the blogs that they find interesting and suit them, this is where blogging community comes. Blogging communities exist because of their similar interest and therefore literally connect with other users to discuss about it (Ivan, 2009).
For example, Malaysia former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir has his own blog and eventually created a blogging community whereby people especially Malaysians will discuss about the topic posted by him. In this blog the taxonomy is a form of pamphlet to literally promote their topic to the audiences (Simons, 2008). However based on my personal thought, I think that his blog is not my style and suitable for me therefore I don't dare to judge because some may say im bias.
Therefore in order to create a community, we must have what is called to connect with one and another. In this case using all sorts of communication with the user such as links and advertisement network will attract and connect from one and another places (Whyte, 2007).
One of the examples of blogging community is the Bing Community, whereby users and visitors are allowed to view pictures and have many links to other site as well.

Blogs is today's hip
According to Technorati (2008) the current size of people owning a blog in 2008 is 184 million and estimated 346 million blog readers. This has proven that blog as the current blog phenomenon and the number of owning and reading blog is still increasing.
Europe is one of the fashion icons in today’s society. Therefore without hesitation many designers uses blog to promote their product, inform users about fashion week and latest trend (Apparel1, 2008).
When it comes to Asia, the first thing can think about is culture. Therefore many blogs posted are all about culture and tradition not to forget travelling.
Malaysia current prevalent and is famous in politic blogs. According to Yeow (2008) Malaysia veterans politicians owned blogs to promote both opposition and government’s point of view.
Many people express their feelings or even voice out their opinion to the community or nation of what they think (BBC, 2006). Therefore it might be a threat to the politics, but at the bright side it somehow helps the politicians. This is because politicians are now much more versatile whereby they started to use alternative media such as blogs to promote their candidate.
‘’During the 2004 Presidential Campaign in the U.S., Gov. Howard Dean was the first presidential candidate to use blogs to promote their campaign’’ (Johny, 2007).
All the blogs stated above have one thing in common, which is multimodality. According to Walsh (2006) stated that multimodality is a form of text that has more than one mode. In this case the benefits of having blogs by Malaysian is it allows users to upload pictures, video and even mp3 music to entertain and inform of the latest trend in fashion, music, movie, even politics and economic to the community.

Document Design
What is a good document design?
Firstly the definition of document design according to Shriver (1997) it is the field concerned with creating texts integrated words and pictures. Comparison between my group and my individual presentation, I realize that there is one point, or what is known as element that I would probably not change, which is consistency. According to Reep (2006, pp. 134) there are four major elements to what is a good document design 1) Balance, 2) Proportion, 3) Sequence and 4) Consistency. The reason for me not changing the style of my presentation in future is due to that consistency helps readers emphasizing similar types of information and the similar importance of a document (Reep 2006). For example, my group presentation (Diagram 1) slide background (despite the first page), were consistent in away where the background images, layout and colour are consistent.

However, my group presentation has a lack of balance, according to Putnis and Patelin (1996 pp. 254) the importance of balancing the document between images and text is to capture reader's attention. An example (Diagram 2) of my group presentation showing only one short sentence without any images, therefore audience might not understand the presentation because of not having any visual to support my saying.

Similarly, Reep (2006, pp. 135) stated that the balance in a good document design should have equally balance of image and text. For that reason, I have changed my individual presentation to a more 'balance document'. In Diagram 3 shows the balance between texts and images whereby I can relate my points by using the images to support my saying.

On the other hand, my group presentation uses capitalization incorrectly. According to Bird (2001), mixing up uppercase and lowercase letters is a pitfall for document design. Based on my group presentation (Diagram 4), the title is incorrect and is unsuitable as it can confuse readers and seemingly unprofessional.

Therefore my individual presentation changes in away to avoid any mistakes I made. In Diagram 5 I use Broadway font style and did not mix the upper and lowercase, instead I uses Kathy's (1997) recommendation, sentence case whereby capitalizing the first letter of the phrase only.

A Start
Probably when I was 6, my mom complained my drawings are gruesome. This is because my drawing consists of dinosaur, Godzilla, alien and war whereby human's blood splatter involved. What makes me draw all the violence? I was a little child! Thinking back, I was influenced by the images whenever I see one, I would stop and stare and if necessary understand the design. I even asked myself, how did it attract me? Why is the design in this manner? What does it mean?

Today, my curiosity of issues in publication and design will be answer. For that, the purpose of this blog is not to educate but to share information of what I learned and understand. Issues in publication and design will discuss not just theoretically but practically, images that are publicize through the emergence of media- internet and blogs that communicates among community are essential due to its power to influence public. This blog is simply to those who have interest in 'reading' images and understanding the message conveyed and the way it is publicized.
